German Blue Card to Settlement: Proving the 21 or 27 Months and Language Level
An EU Blue Card holder may qualify for Germany's settlement permit after 27 months of qualifying employment with A1 German, or after 21 months with B1 German, provided the remaining requirements are met. These are employment and evidence conditions, not an automatic permanent status granted when a calendar reminder expires.
Establish the employment period you can support
Build a month-by-month record of the relevant employment, residence permission and pension position. Keep each employer, actual start and finish date, role and supporting contract together. The first arrival stamp in a passport does not demonstrate that every subsequent month was qualifying employment.
If you changed employers, had a gap or held a different residence title, show the full history. Do not silently combine periods or replace an uncertain date with the one most favourable to the application. The competent foreigners authority must assess the periods that count under the applicable requirements.
Your current position matters as well as the completed months. Berlin's official service, for example, requires continued employment in a job meeting the Blue Card conditions. An expired contract from a previous employer should therefore not be treated as a complete explanation of the situation at application.
Match pension evidence to the work history
The facilitated route requires the relevant pension contributions or accepted comparable provision. Gather the pension information alongside employment records instead of assuming that a signed contract proves contributions were made. Salary slips can help explain deductions, but the authority's evidence requirements still need to be checked.
Where records are incomplete, obtain the missing information and identify the affected dates. An overseas pension account or an unrelated private policy should not be described as an accepted replacement without confirmation. Berlin's published checklist refers to German pension information or proof of comparable entitlements; other local procedures should be checked with the responsible office.
Use evidence for the claimed language level
A1 corresponds to the 27-month arrangement and B1 can reduce the required period to 21 months. A language course booking, informal conversation ability or a self-assessment is different from accepted evidence. Check the certificate or alternative evidence that your authority accepts, including the name and level recorded.
Language and knowledge of Germany's legal and social system are separate requirements. A document useful for one should not automatically be counted for the other. The official federal guidance refers to basic knowledge of the legal and social order and life in Germany, commonly demonstrated through the relevant test. Some local checklists explain other acceptable educational evidence.
Prepare evidence of present living conditions
The federal guidance also covers livelihood and sufficient living space. Berlin additionally explains health insurance and income documents in its local checklist. Put current income, accommodation, household composition and insurance in their own sections so that the application reflects how you actually live.
Do not turn Berlin's online procedure or document dates into a nationwide rule. Your main residence determines the relevant authority. Someone living elsewhere should use that office's current process and confirm what needs updating if the family moves, a contract changes or the passport is replaced.
Keep the family's status and the decision separate
A settlement permit is not German citizenship. A spouse or child does not automatically acquire the principal applicant's 21- or 27-month route. Record each person's residence title, expiry and next step separately, even when the household prepares documents together.
Submitting an application, paying a fee, receiving an appointment and obtaining the permit are different events. Plan travel and employment changes against your actual documents and any formal confirmation received. Processing time should remain an estimate, rather than the date on which every family commitment is made irreversible.
