Germany EU Blue Card Salary in 2026: Which Threshold Applies to Your Offer?

Germany's EU Blue Card salary test depends on the category that your job and background actually meet. In 2026, the general gross annual threshold is EUR50,700. The lower figure of EUR45,934.20 is available under specified arrangements; it is not a salary option that every applicant can choose.

Identify the basis before comparing pay

Start with the qualification, the proposed job and the relevant dates. The official Blue Card guidance describes recognised or comparable academic qualifications and certain qualifying tertiary credentials. A specific German job offer is required, with employment lasting at least six months and the appropriate connection between the role and qualification. Regulated professions have additional licensing requirements.

Keep these tests separate from salary. An attractive salary does not repair an unsuitable qualification or establish permission to practise a regulated profession. Equally, a recognised degree does not establish that every job offered to its holder is suitable for the Blue Card. Read the job description alongside the qualification evidence.

Check the lower-threshold category

For shortage occupations, the lower 2026 salary threshold requires the relevant conditions and Federal Employment Agency approval. Use the official occupational classification and the actual duties. A technology company's marketing position does not become an IT specialist role simply because the employer works in technology.

The official guidance also covers new entrants whose last degree or equivalent qualification was obtained less than three years ago. Under that arrangement, qualifying entry-level jobs across professions may be assessed against the lower threshold, with Federal Employment Agency approval. The issue is the qualifying award and its timing, rather than the applicant merely being young.

There is a separate provision for certain IT professionals without a formal qualification. It requires specified university-level professional experience, including at least three years in the preceding seven, together with the appropriate German job and salary. General computer use or a short software course should not be presented as equivalent evidence.

Separate contractual pay from estimates

Prepare a remuneration schedule showing fixed gross annual salary, payment frequency, bonuses, allowances and non-cash benefits. Attach the clauses that determine when each component is payable. Where a bonus depends on future sales or performance, do not assume that the maximum advertised package is accepted as guaranteed qualifying salary.

Questions about what can be counted should be resolved against the actual contract and the competent authority's requirements. Do not add a personal valuation of accommodation or a company car to the salary test without an accepted basis. The contract used for the application should describe the arrangement the employer genuinely intends to implement.

Check the employment period and working hours as well. A six-month contract and an annual salary threshold describe different aspects of the assessment. A homemade annualisation calculation does not, on its own, establish how an unusual payment or part-time arrangement will be assessed.

Compare eligibility with the relocation budget

The threshold is gross pay in euros. Your disposable income depends on deductions and personal circumstances, while housing and family costs depend on where and how you will live. Prepare a separate budget for rent, deposits, insurance, travel and continuing commitments in your present country. Do not describe the threshold as an all-inclusive relocation cost.

Before submission, recheck the applicable year's figures and any contract changes. Salary thresholds are updated annually. A practical review should identify the category, evidence still needed and any remuneration issue requiring confirmation. If the Blue Card does not fit, another employment residence route may warrant assessment, but its requirements must be checked separately.
