Germany EU Blue Card Eligibility: Qualification, Job Offer and Professional Permission
Germany's EU Blue Card assessment connects a suitable qualification or specified professional-experience route with a concrete German job offer. Salary is one part of that assessment. Before paying for relocation, check the qualification basis, the proposed duties, the employment period and any professional permission required for the actual job.
Distinguish having an offer from looking for one
The Blue Card requires a specific German job offer. It should not be treated as a general permission to enter Germany first and then look for any work. Someone without an offer is at a different stage and may need to examine other appropriate arrangements, with their own eligibility requirements.
For an existing offer, obtain the employer's identity, workplace, role, duties, salary and intended employment period. A recruiter's broad statement that a company sponsors overseas workers does not establish the terms of your proposed employment. The evidence should identify the real employer and the position actually available.
Establish the qualification basis
The official guidance covers German academic qualifications and comparable foreign academic qualifications. It also describes specified tertiary qualifications outside the traditional academic-degree route, with requirements concerning training duration and qualification level. Do not extend that wording to every short course or vocational certificate.
Gather the award, institution, subject, dates and any formal comparability or recognition evidence already obtained. An attractive course title, university ranking or former colleague's successful application is not a substitute for the evidence relating to your own qualification.
Where a formal check remains necessary, identify it before treating the file as complete. Keep the original credential details consistent across the CV, translation and application. If a document uses a previous name or a different spelling, provide a genuine explanation rather than rewriting the original record.
Compare the duties with the qualification
The job must match the relevant qualification under the applicable Blue Card rules. Read the actual responsibilities, required knowledge and professional level alongside the credential. Similar English job titles can describe different work, while different titles can sometimes describe closely related functions.
Ask the employer for a truthful description of the work. Do not adjust duties on paper simply to resemble an eligible category while leaving the real position unchanged. The application should explain an existing professional match, not create a fictional one for immigration purposes.
Regulated occupations need a separate check of recognition and permission to practise. A licence held overseas or an employer's willingness to recruit does not itself establish German professional authorisation. Coordinate this issue with the visa requirements instead of postponing it until after arrival.
Check salary and the employment period together
The official guidance requires employment for at least six months. In 2026, the general gross annual salary threshold is EUR50,700, with a lower EUR45,934.20 threshold under specified arrangements. Shortage occupations and recent graduates have distinct requirements, including Federal Employment Agency approval for those branches.
Use the actual employment terms and the correct category. Do not assume that the lower figure applies because the applicant is young or because the employer's industry is commonly described as short of workers. Fixed and variable pay should be identified separately for the appropriate assessment.
Examine the specific IT alternative accurately
Certain IT professionals without a formal qualification may qualify under a specified experience route. The official guidance includes a suitable IT offer, the relevant salary and university-level experience gained for at least three of the preceding seven years. It is not a general no-qualification route for every occupation involving computers.
Prepare evidence of the genuine duties and dates if that provision is relevant. End the eligibility review with a short list of established conditions and unresolved evidence. A positive preliminary view is useful for planning, but the final residence decision remains separate from the employer's offer and any professional service engagement.
