France Visitor Long-Stay Steps: VLS-TS Validation, Temporary Visas and Later ANEF Applications
France's visitor long-stay visa, post-arrival validation and later residence-card application are separate stages. A VLS-TS holder must validate that document online within three months of arrival under the official instructions. A temporary long-stay VLS-T or a visa annotated for a card application has different follow-up; read the actual issued document before planning the next step.
Establish the private non-working purpose
France-Visas describes a private stay exceeding three months without professional activity. Prepare the real resources, medical cover and accommodation and the formal non-working commitment required for the visitor route. A foreign payer or an online working method does not automatically make continued professional activity compatible with that commitment.
Nationality, lawful residence and current status determine the applicable visa procedure. Use the official visa assistant and responsible office for the person's situation. Short tourist visa exemption should not be presented as automatic permission to settle for the intended longer period.
Prepare the genuine supporting file
Connect identity, financial evidence, insurance and housing to the actual applicant and period. Personal documents, employer or pension records, family support and third-party certificates need their genuine sources. Do not alter dates, account holders or housing details to make unrelated records appear to match.
Keep the completed submission and any official request or response. An appointment, local saved form or document package sent to an adviser is not a visa grant. The government decision and issued document establish the next stage, rather than a private readiness label.
Read the issued visa category and conditions
The visitor page describes VLS-TS and the possible VLS-T for someone certain not to extend the stay beyond that temporary visa. The general long-stay guidance separately describes a visa annotated for a residence-card application within two months of arrival. Do not apply one branch's obligations to every document labelled long stay.
Retain the actual validity, annotations and entry evidence for each person. A household can have different passports or documents, and one family member's result does not complete the others' procedures. Arrange travel using issued documents instead of treating the proposed flight date as the start of a right that has not yet been granted.
Validate the VLS-TS within its stated period
For a VLS-TS, the official general guidance requires online validation through ANEF within three months after arrival in France. Use the actual arrival record and keep the formal validation evidence. Validation is a step attached to the visa already issued, not a new promise of indefinite residence.
If the document is another type, follow its actual requirements rather than borrowing the VLS-TS rule. An adviser should not mark a card application, temporary visa or portal account as completed validation merely because the person can log into ANEF.
Plan the later card application and read the receipt correctly
Service Public describes the visitor card filing window as no earlier than four months and no later than two months before the relevant current document expires. Keep this separate from the initial three-month VLS-TS validation period; they have different triggers and purposes.
The immediate ANEF attestation de dépôt is not a provisional residence document and does not itself prove lawful stay. The official guidance distinguishes it from an attestation de prolongation d'instruction or a favourable-decision attestation. Identify the actual document received and its effect rather than reporting every upload receipt as permission to remain.
Save validation, application, requests, decisions and card records separately. Government fees, document work, insurance and living costs also have different purposes. A planned application or payment does not guarantee approval, future renewal, work rights or the outcome of any later change in residence purpose.
