DAMA VETASSESS Renewal or Reassessment: Check the Occupation, Result and Deadline
If your VETASSESS DAMA assessment needs to be updated, first identify what changed. A renewal is for an applicant with a suitable initial result who is applying for the same occupation within the stated window. A reassessment can cover the same or a different occupation, but its window is shorter. A move to another DAMA region is a separate question: check with the receiving region before relying on the old outcome.
From 29 June 2026, VETASSESS allows DAMA renewal and reassessment applications through its Professional Skills Recognition portal. The route depends on the original application, result, occupation and dates; paying a fee does not automatically extend an assessment or secure a visa.
Renewal and reassessment answer different questions
VETASSESS says a DAMA reassessment may be lodged within 12 months of the date the initial application was completed. It can be for the same occupation or a different one. A renewal is available within three years of completion when the initial application received a suitable outcome, and it must be for the same occupation. Check the current portal guidance against your own record before lodging.
The practical distinction is simple: if the original result was suitable and you need to renew the same occupation, check the renewal criteria. If you want the assessor to consider the same or a different occupation again, check whether the reassessment window is still open. If the initial application has not been completed, do not treat it as a post-outcome renewal or reassessment.
Keep the result date and application-completion date separate
VETASSESS’s DAMA information states that an assessment outcome is valid for three years from its issue date. Its June 2026 announcement describes the renewal and reassessment windows by reference to when the initial application was completed. Those dates serve different purposes. Record both from the outcome letter, portal and official correspondence; do not substitute one for the other when calculating a deadline.
If the dates do not match or the original application status is unclear, ask VETASSESS to confirm which date applies to the service you are considering. A result being within its stated validity period does not by itself prove that a particular renewal or reassessment application is eligible.
A new occupation needs evidence of the actual work
If your duties or occupation have changed, compare the work you actually performed with the nominated occupation and the relevant assessment criteria. Set out the dates, responsibilities, qualifications and supporting records. A new job title alone does not establish that the duties meet a different occupation’s requirements. Do not rewrite old employment records to fit a new application.
A change of occupation during an application that is still being processed is a different situation from requesting reassessment after an outcome. VETASSESS’s DAMA guidance says applicants who selected the wrong occupation or DAMA region should contact the assessor about the applicable withdrawal and resubmission process. Do not withdraw an existing application solely because a portal offers another option; first confirm the process for that exact application.
A DAMA assessment does not automatically transfer to another region
For occupations with DAMA-specific criteria, VETASSESS outcome letters identify the relevant region. If an employer is in another designated area, contact that area’s Designated Area Representative (DAR) to check whether the existing result can be used there. The region, occupation and any DAMA-specific criteria all matter.
A general VETASSESS assessment may be usable for some occupations without DAMA-specific criteria, subject to the occupation being available under the relevant agreement and the applicable requirements. Confirm this with VETASSESS and the receiving regional authority before relying on the old letter. Do not treat a change of residential address, employer or job location as approval to transfer the assessment.
DAMA itself is a two-tier arrangement between government, a regional representative and individual employers. A skills assessment is one part of the process. It does not provide a regional endorsement, create an employer labour agreement, nominate a worker or grant a visa.
Prepare these records before choosing a service
Gather the original VETASSESS application number and outcome letter; the date the initial application was completed and the date the result was issued; the occupation and any DAMA region named in the outcome; and a short explanation of what you want to change. If duties, qualifications or employment have changed, organise genuine evidence by date and source.
Also identify the receiving region and employer, if either has changed. Separate steps already completed from those still pending, such as regional endorsement, an employer labour agreement or a visa application. For third-party letters, use the issuer’s genuine records. Keep the original submission and explain any correction rather than silently replacing a document.
Check fees and submission details on the current page
VETASSESS publishes separate fees for DAMA assessment, renewal, reassessment and outcome review. Fees and portal instructions can change, so use the current fee schedule for the correct assessment category before paying. A standard professional assessment fee may not apply to a DAMA-specific assessment. Do not assume an old invoice or a search result shows the current amount.
Before signing the application declaration, confirm the occupation, region, attachments and applicant or representative authority. Keep the submitted copy and portal receipt. A receipt confirms a submission or payment, not a suitable outcome or visa approval.
Questions to resolve before lodging
Is the original assessment complete, and was the outcome suitable? Which date controls the service window being considered? Is the request for the same occupation, a different occupation or another DAMA region? Does the receiving region accept the existing assessment? Which separate employer or visa steps are still outstanding?
If any answer is unclear, get confirmation from VETASSESS or the relevant regional authority before choosing a paid service. For individual planning, PremierVisa Group can help organise the records and identify which questions remain open; the relevant authority decides the assessment and visa outcome.
