VETASSESS DAMA Assessments: How Part-Time Experience and the 20-Hour Minimum Differ from a Full-Time Job
VETASSESS states that it can consider part-time employment pro rata for DAMA assessments, with a minimum of 20 hours per week. That does not turn one year at 20 hours into one year of full-time experience. Check the actual occupation, region and evidence requirements before calculating a usable period. The treatment of past experience is also separate from the requirements of a future sponsored job.
Start with the correct assessment service
VETASSESS asks applicants to check DAMA requirements by state, region and occupation. Not every occupation is assessed by the same authority, and a general professional assessment should not be assumed to use the same rules. Record the proposed occupation, employer arrangement and assessment service before copying a calculation from a friend. The agency also asks for an employer offer or sponsorship arrangement first; calculating experience does not create an independent DAMA pathway.
Hours are only one part of the enquiry. Relevant duties, skill level and other occupational criteria still matter. A long employment history or several sources of income do not establish that all the work qualifies. Keep a complete factual history and identify uncertain periods rather than promising a result before the occupation has been settled.
VETASSESS also requires employment used to meet the assessment criteria to be at the appropriate skill level and completed within the five years before lodgement. Once the relevant occupational criteria have been met, suitable work from the preceding ten years may be listed as additional employment. That is not permission to replace the basic requirement with every older job.
Use the official example for its stated purpose
The agency gives an example of two years at 20 hours per week meeting a requirement of one year at 38 hours per week. Treat this as its illustration of pro-rata employment, subject to the assessment requirements. Do not turn it into a universal rule that any matching total of hours must be accepted, or use overtime to present a very short engagement as several years of experience.
Variable hours, periods below the minimum and overlapping jobs need their real records. Do not assume two jobs below the stated threshold can be combined, or count overlapping dates twice. Ask how the actual arrangement is treated. A spreadsheet can add hours, but cannot establish occupational relevance or the authenticity of the evidence.
Connect duties, hours and payments
List each employer, role, start and end date, and actual duties.
Record weekly hours and changes between part-time and full-time employment.
Keep relevant rosters, timesheets, payslips and bank payment records.
Identify the person issuing the employment statement and their contact details.
Explain leave, interruptions, overlapping work and periods requiring clarification.
An employer letter describing your final full-time position does not necessarily establish the hours worked throughout an earlier period. Annual income evidence may not show weekly hours, while a single payslip may say little about the full role. Identify what each document proves and use the current assessment checklist to address the gaps.
VETASSESS explains that it may clarify duties through a technical interview or by contacting a nominated referee. Statements should therefore describe genuine work, not an occupation title retrofitted to the application. Obtain corrections from the original issuer where necessary, and preserve part-time wording accurately in translations.
Assess the future sponsored position separately
Acceptance of part-time employment history does not give a regional employer permission to offer any desired reduced-hours arrangement. The proposed position, employer labour agreement, nomination and visa conditions need their own review. A change in future hours cannot be justified simply by pointing to the skills assessment minimum.
Prepare two enquiries: how the past experience can be assessed, and what the future job must satisfy. Support the first with your employment timeline and evidence, and the second with the genuine role and relevant agreement. Connect those answers before committing to the assessment and relocation timetable. A positive skills assessment remains distinct from a visa or permanent residence decision.
