Brazil Digital Nomad Procedure: Overseas Visa, In-Country Residence and the 90-Day or 30-Day Registration Clock
An overseas Brazil digital nomad temporary visa and an in-country residence authorisation are different procedures. After approval, registration remains a separate obligation. The current official registration service states 90 days after entry for temporary visa holders and 30 days after publication in the official gazette for an in-country residence authorisation. Those clocks should not be replaced with the date a card eventually arrives.
Identify the correct starting position
Record the applicant's passport, lawful residence, present location and current Brazilian status, if any. An overseas application goes through the relevant consular procedure, while Normative Resolution 45 also provides for a residence application by someone already in Brazil. The existence of the latter route does not erase entry conditions or the need to assess current lawful stay.
The resolution allows the described activities in visitor status subject to the applicable nationality, visa and stay rules. Do not assume that every passport has a 90-day visitor allowance. The registration deadline after entry on a temporary visa is a different rule from a person's visitor permission.
Prepare the documents for that procedure
The overseas visa list includes the travel document, insurance valid in Brazil, consular application and fee items, transport evidence, the relevant criminal-record document and digital nomad evidence. The in-country residence provision has a separate list, including its particular identity, parentage, fee and background requirements.
Both involve the substantive digital nomad evidence: remote-working capability, the qualifying overseas relationship and the financial direction. Monthly support of at least USD1,500 from a foreign paying source or available bank funds of USD18,000 does not eliminate the work requirement. Complete the actual checklist rather than treating a balance as the whole application.
Record submission and approval separately
A prepared file, appointment, fee payment or consultant's acknowledgement is not itself government approval. Save the actual application receipt and any request for further evidence. If the authority requires a correction, retain what was submitted and the response rather than replacing the file without a record.
When the decision arrives, retain the formal document and the dates it actually establishes. For an in-country authorisation, the official gazette publication is relevant to the stated registration clock. An email noticed later should not automatically be treated as resetting a period that the official service ties to publication.
Act on the appropriate registration trigger
For a temporary visa holder, the official service specifies registration within 90 days of entry. Keep the actual entry evidence with the visa and prepare the registration step promptly. The presence of that deadline should not be read as an invitation to defer every practical step until the final day.
For an in-country residence authorisation, the service specifies 30 days after publication in the Diário Oficial. Record the publication and arrange the competent Federal Police process. Where a household enters on different dates or has different decisions, manage each person's trigger and documents rather than copying the principal applicant's calendar.
Complete the personal identification and card stages
The registration service describes the form, applicable payment, appointment and personal attendance, including identification and biometric steps. Registration establishes the RNM number and relates to issuance of the CRNM residence card. A booked appointment and a collected card are separate milestones, each needing its own evidence.
Check the competent unit's current instructions. If the digital service is unavailable, the official service directs applicants to the competent Federal Police unit; an unofficial paper workaround should not be invented. Appointment slots, card production and an immigration decision also have different timings, so none should be presented as a guaranteed overall processing period.
Keep the resulting records together with the work, support and insurance documents. Review later travel and renewal using the person's actual status and documents, rather than assuming that a submission receipt is a universal substitute for an entry document or valid residence permission.
