Subclass 189 Hong Kong stream: Evidence of four years of usual residence when you have spent time overseas
The primary applicant must have been usually resident in Australia for a continuous period of at least four years immediately before applying. Home Affairs considers where you actually lived and whether you intended to make that place your home. Its stream guidance does not give a universal overseas-day allowance. If your history includes travel, caring for family overseas or remote work, reconstruct the actual living arrangements during each period.
Reconstruct the four years from your intended application date
List each Australian address and the dates you moved in and out. Collect records that explain your actual living arrangements, such as tenancy or accommodation documents, rent payments, work or study records and household correspondence. If you lived with relatives or in accommodation arranged by an employer, look for records that identify both you and the period involved. Explain differences between your residential address and the address used for mail.
Record the exact dates and purpose of each overseas stay. Travel records help establish departure and return. They need context to show what happened to your living arrangements. For example, someone who took leave to care for a relative and then returned to an established home and job has a different history from someone who ended a lease and began a long-term job abroad. Record the real facts and collect documents that support the chronology.
Review longer or repeated absences individually
For each period, ask where you stayed, what arrangements you kept in Australia and what you did on return. For remote work, identify where you physically worked and lived. The location of the employer's head office answers a different question. A partner's continued residence in Australia can help explain the household arrangements, but keep the primary applicant's movements and circumstances clear.
Where documents appear inconsistent, check the dates and what the documents actually establish. A lease signing date, move-in date and billing date can differ. If an older record is unavailable, ask the issuer about copies and identify any gaps rather than assuming a current document covers the missing period.
Keep residence evidence separate from the visa holding record
The stream also requires a qualifying visa and a qualifying holding period. Put your visa grant notices alongside your residence timeline, then check the evidence for each requirement separately. Before a review with 卓越移民 Premiervisa Group, prepare a dated list of residences, absences and supporting records and identify the periods you would like to clarify.
