Subclass 189 Hong Kong stream: What to check after renewing your passport
The primary applicant must hold a Hong Kong or British National (Overseas) passport when applying for the subclass 189 Hong Kong stream. If you recently renewed your passport, check the new document and confirm that Home Affairs has linked it to your existing visa record. Keep the passport history separate from the visa grant and expiry dates.
Keep the new and previous passport details together
Use your current passport to check the passport requirement on the proposed lodgement date. A previous passport can explain why a grant notice or movement record carries a different number. Record each document's issue and expiry dates, then note the grant, commencement and expiry dates of your visa separately.
If you hold more than one passport, check which one satisfies the stream requirement and which document is linked to your current visa. A Hong Kong identity card can support your identity records, while the stream requires the relevant passport. If a renewal is pending, verify the status of the passport you actually hold before choosing an application date.
Update the relevant record with Home Affairs
Home Affairs directs most applicants to open the relevant visa or application in ImmiAccount, choose the option to update details and select the passport change option. Enter the new details and the reason for the change. If you cannot import an application or your change falls within a category the department handles separately, follow its instructions for the applicable form. Keep the submission confirmation and check that the new document is correctly linked before relying on it for travel.
If the name or spelling has changed, identify whether this reflects a new transliteration or a formal name change. Keep appropriate supporting documents, such as a marriage or change-of-name record where relevant, and accurately declare former names as requested. Check that translations and identity, residence and travel records can be matched to the same person.
Make a final check before lodging
Put the passport renewal date, current visa expiry and proposed lodgement date on one timeline. Updating a passport does not extend the visa.
