Subclass 189 Hong Kong stream: adding a partner or reporting a newborn after lodgement
You can request to add an eligible family member to your subclass 189 Hong Kong stream application after lodgement and before the Department of Home Affairs makes a decision. Use Form 1436 to add an eligible partner or dependent child. If your baby is born between lodgement and decision, notify Home Affairs promptly under its newborn instructions, even if the baby's passport has yet to be issued.
Adding a spouse or de facto partner
Open the original application in ImmiAccount and check its status and latest correspondence. Once Home Affairs has made a decision, the Form 1436 process is no longer available for that application. While the application is pending, check that the person qualifies as a member of the family unit. Complete Form 1436, pay the applicable government application charge through ImmiAccount and attach the form and evidence.
Start with the partner's passport and identity details. A married couple can prepare their marriage certificate and any requested evidence of their ongoing relationship. De facto partners can gather evidence that reflects their circumstances, such as records of living together or sharing household expenses. If names or dates differ across records, have an explanation and relevant supporting evidence ready. Any family member added to the application must meet the applicable health and character requirements.
If your relationship status changes and your partner is not applying with you, still report the change to Home Affairs. Use Update details in ImmiAccount and follow the instructions to notify a change in circumstances. If your partner also intends to join the application, check separately that you have completed the additional applicant process.
Reporting a baby born while the application is pending
Notify Home Affairs as soon as possible using its newborn guidance. Prepare a colour scan of the birth certificate and, if issued, the child's passport pages showing the photograph and personal details. Where the passport is still pending, report the birth using the documents you have and provide the passport details when available.
For a child born before lodgement but omitted from the application, explain the original application details and check the ordinary process for adding a family member. If the baby was born after a decision, check the separate procedure that applies to the child's place of birth and the parents' status at that time.
Keeping track after you submit
Save the notification date, copies of your uploads and any payment receipt. Monitor ImmiAccount for requests for identity records, relationship evidence or health examinations. When the decision arrives, check the details for each applicant. If you need help identifying the applicable procedure, have your lodgement date, current application status and the date of the marriage or birth ready when contacting Premiervisa Group.
