A Condition 8580 Request on a 494 Visa: Organising Address Evidence Within 28 Days
Condition 8580 requires a holder who receives the Minister's written request to provide evidence of any or all of the specified addresses within 28 days after the date of the request. The categories cover the holder's residence, each employer, each employment location and an educational institution attended. Check your actual conditions and the complete request before deciding what to provide.
This is a response to an evidence request, separate from routine address updates or an application for another visa. Do not assume that updating a current address answers a request about an earlier period. Equally, do not send unrelated years of private documents when the letter asks a specific question. Identify the person, period, address categories, method and deadline in the actual notice.
Save the request before collecting attachments
Keep the full letter, attachments and account correspondence. If an adviser received it, obtain the complete version rather than a message saying immigration wants proof of address. Check authenticity through your established official account or contact arrangements. Record a practical internal completion date before the actual deadline, leaving time to review translations and unreadable pages.
Make a response list with one line for each requested point, its period, the available evidence and any gap. A short request can involve several workplaces or family members. Assign responsibility explicitly so an employer, school and applicant do not each assume somebody else has answered the same question.
Address category | Keep the distinction clear |
Residence | Where the person actually lived, not just received mail |
Employer | The employer's address for the requested period |
Work location | The branch, site or other location where duties occurred |
Education | The actual campus and attendance period, not simply the institution's headquarters |
Build a timeline the documents can support
Use genuine change dates. Do not shift a mid-month move to the first day for a cleaner spreadsheet. A lease can cover a longer period than actual occupancy, and an old bank letter may show an address that was never updated. Explain what each record supports rather than treating every document as conclusive proof of the entire history.
If you lived with relatives or in employer-provided accommodation, describe the arrangement and identify contemporaneous records. A new explanatory statement should carry its real date; it must not be presented as an old tenancy agreement. Preserve originals while preparing the response index.
For employment, distinguish the registered office, payroll address and actual worksite. Ask the employer for existing records and a factual explanation of relevant locations and periods. A payslip can support employment and payment without proving where every shift occurred. For hybrid work or rotating sites, describe the real arrangement rather than using a convenient compliant mailing address.
For education, check the campus and any changes in attendance or placement. Family members can have different addresses or schedules. Do not copy a parent's movements into a child's history merely to make the family tables match. Online study should be described accurately, including where the person actually participated when relevant to the request.
Missing evidence needs an action, not a replacement story
Request old records from their actual holders and retain the request and response. If recovery fails, identify what is missing, the attempts made and the alternative evidence for professional review. Never manufacture bills, alter dates or ask an employer to replace historic addresses with today's details. A proposed extension of time should not be treated as granted without confirmation.
Use the submission channel in the request and check that the final versions were actually sent to the correct matter. Keep a receipt and file list. Saving documents locally or sending them to an adviser does not establish that Home Affairs received the response. Successful submission also does not establish acceptance or a finding of compliance.
A separate written interview request under condition 8581 requires its own attention. Providing address documents does not replace attending an interview at the specified time and in the specified manner. If the history suggests a possible breach or the deadline is at risk, seek appropriate Australian migration advice promptly using the complete facts and notice.
