Selected in the 462 Ballot? Check Your Education and Functional English Evidence
Being selected in the Australian Work and Holiday (subclass 462) ballot does not confirm that you meet the visa criteria. Chinese passport holders still need to meet the education requirement and Functional English requirement, as well as the other applicable criteria. Treat education and English as two separate checks: one concerns the level or duration of study; the other concerns an accepted test, assessment or English-medium study history. The selection notice gives a limited period to apply, so request formal records as soon as you are selected.
Choose the education pathway you can prove
For a Chinese passport holder, the current Home Affairs page lists two ways to meet the education requirement: hold a tertiary qualification from a university, college or training centre, or have completed two years of undergraduate university study. Listed tertiary qualifications include degrees, graduate certificates and diplomas. A Senior Secondary Certificate of Education and Australian Certificates I to IV are not included in that list of acceptable tertiary qualifications. High-school completion, a short course or a vocational completion certificate should not be treated as equivalent to two years of undergraduate study.
If you graduated, prepare the formal award or graduation documents showing the qualification, issuing institution and completion status. If you rely on two years of undergraduate study, obtain an official transcript and an enrolment or academic record that shows the program and completed study period. An offer letter or tuition receipt alone may not establish that you completed the required study. If you transferred institutions, received credit, took leave or changed programs, connect the records so the timeline and completed study can be understood.
Education route | What to check |
Tertiary qualification | Confirm it is a degree, graduate certificate or diploma and identify the issuing institution |
Two years of undergraduate study | Use official academic records showing the undergraduate program, dates and study completed |
Not enough on its own | High-school certificate, Certificate I to IV, short-course record or offer letter |
Prove Functional English separately
Meeting the education requirement does not meet the English requirement. The applicant must also show at least Functional English. Home Affairs accepts specified English tests or assessments and certain periods of study where all instruction was in English. Decide which evidence route applies to you, then compare it with the current visa page and your ImmiAccount checklist. Being able to hold a conversation or having taken one English subject does not by itself establish that you meet the formal requirement.
For a test result, check the accepted test, the required score and the date of the test. Home Affairs currently applies a 12-month timing rule to relevant tests or assessments before lodgement, so an old result may not qualify even if the score is high. Keep the complete test report and candidate details rather than a cropped phone screenshot. Test scales differ; do not convert a score from one provider into another provider’s threshold yourself.
For English-medium study, request a school letter that identifies the course, dates and language of instruction, then keep it with transcripts and award documents. Home Affairs lists different study periods for different education histories, including specified schooling, study at an Australian institution and other full-time courses taught in English. A school’s English-language website or an English course title does not show that you personally completed the required period with English as the language of instruction. Do not combine partial periods from unrelated pathways unless the current rule expressly allows it.
Complete these checks after selection
First, read the selection notice and calculate its application deadline in Australian Eastern Time. The ballot page gives selected applicants 28 calendar days to lodge a first visa application; registration or selection is not lodgement. Second, compare your passport identity details with your education and test documents. Third, use the current ImmiAccount checklist to confirm the document category and upload location. If a document is not in English, follow the Department’s current translation instructions and keep the original with the translation.
Selection is not a guarantee of a visa grant. Home Affairs still assesses education, English, funds, health, character, immigration history and any other applicable criteria. If a school or testing body must issue a formal record, request it promptly and track the expected date. If an essential document may not arrive before the deadline, rely on the notice and official instructions rather than assuming a private adviser, school or translator can extend the period.
A short evidence matrix can show whether your gap is a qualification document, proof of completed study, an English test within the allowed period or a school statement confirming the language of instruction. Requirements can change. Before lodging, recheck the current Home Affairs first subclass 462 page, your selection notice and the live ImmiAccount checklist.
