Australia 189 Study Points: Ninety-Two Weeks, Sixteen Months and Separate Bonuses

A course marketed as two years does not, by itself, establish Australian study points for a 189 visa. Check the registered study duration, the actual study period in Australia and the eligible qualification. Regional study and specialist research qualifications are separate points items with additional requirements. Start with the formal course and personal study records rather than a combined score promised by a brochure.

Ninety-two weeks and sixteen months measure different things

Home Affairs describes two academic years as ninety-two weeks of CRICOS-registered study contributing to an eligible qualification. The Australian study requirement also involves at least sixteen calendar months of study in Australia, English instruction and a visa authorising study. Relevant courses must meet the other qualification and registration conditions. The two duration checks are not interchangeable.

The official guidance measures the actual period from course commencement, generally lectures rather than orientation, to completion of all academic requirements. Graduation ceremonies and the date a certificate was printed may be different events. Obtain a completion letter, transcript and course dates instead of calculating solely from entry and exit stamps.

Explain credits, overlaps and study locations

Prior-learning credits can affect the study counted. Preserve the credit decision, originating course, location and relationship to the final qualification. The guidance allows relevant earlier CRICOS study in specified circumstances, while overlapping study cannot be counted twice. A university’s academic decision to award a qualification and satisfaction of migration study requirements are different assessments.

Record each term’s actual location and study mode, including overseas campuses, exchanges or online study while outside Australia. The name of an Australian institution does not make every part of a course study in Australia. Where some study occurred overseas, examine the qualifying Australian portion against the actual requirements rather than assuming the whole course either automatically qualifies or automatically fails.

Regional study has its own additional conditions

The regional-study item provides five points for an eligible qualification meeting the Australian study requirement, obtained while living and studying at a campus in a designated regional area, without distance education. Check the campus actually attended and genuine residence during the relevant study. The university’s head-office address does not establish the location of all campuses or students.

Keep the course and address timelines aligned using genuine residence records. A relative’s address should not be used to create residence that did not occur. Campus moves or mixed delivery need their real facts documented and assessed. Do not rewrite enrolment records to make every term appear identical.

Specialist research qualifications are another separate item

The ten-point specialist-education item concerns a research master’s or doctorate awarded by an Australian institution after at least two academic years in a specified relevant field. Home Affairs lists eligible science, information technology, engineering and related fields. A taught master’s does not become a research master’s merely because it includes a dissertation or a technology-related course name.

Obtain the formal qualification type, course information and field details. Ordinary qualification points, Australian study, regional study and specialist education have separate requirements. Do not add the same points item repeatedly because you completed several courses. Nor should every doctorate be assumed to receive the additional specialist points.

Prepare a file that explains the actual learning history

Index the transcript, completion letter, award, course code and credits, with term-by-term campuses, locations and modes. Ask the institution to confirm academic facts rather than sign a guarantee of migration points. If dates differ across documents, identify the event each date records and preserve the explanation.

Keep completed qualifications separate from forecasts of future study points. Recheck the claim against the relevant requirements and timing before relying on it. Course fees, living costs and career value also matter when choosing education; an additional points item is not a promise of an invitation, permanent residence or a particular outcome.
