Your 189 Invitation Gives You 60 Days: Checking Evidence and Completing Lodgement

A subclass 189 points-tested invitation gives you 60 calendar days to apply for the visa. Home Affairs says it cannot extend that period. The immediate job is to establish that the claims behind your invitation are supportable, then complete the application correctly. An invitation is permission to apply, rather than a visa grant.

Read the notice that belongs to your EOI

Check the complete SkillSelect notification, including the EOI reference, visa stream, nominated occupation, invited score and deadline. This article concerns the points-tested stream. A 189 Hong Kong stream application or an invitation to apply for state nomination follows a different process. A forwarded email heading does not establish which stage you have reached.

Record the exact date, time and relevant time zone shown in your instructions. Calendar days include weekends; describing the period as two months can give the wrong planning date. If a representative receives correspondence, agree who passes it on and who checks it. Set an earlier internal preparation deadline without confusing it with the government deadline.

Build an evidence record for the invited score

Check each claim against the actual documents, including any claimed age, English, qualifications, employment and partner factors. Remaining above the minimum points threshold does not establish that you meet the score on the invitation. An employment history written for a CV may also differ from employment that qualifies for a particular points claim.

Separate a missing document from a fact that was not true at the relevant time. An employer may be reissuing an accurate reference; that is different from a period of work that had not yet been completed. Do not change employment dates or assume later experience automatically repairs an earlier claim. Put discrepancies before an appropriately qualified adviser with the complete timeline.

Skills assessments require their own check of purpose, dates and validity. Home Affairs has a specific statement about a suitable assessment obtained within the invitation period. That does not justify a general promise that any expired assessment can be disregarded. Provide the original assessment and later correspondence rather than asking about renewal without showing the actual documents.

Prepare the application as a complete record

  • Identify each applicant and the identity and relationship documents that apply.

  • Match the claimed points and skills requirements to original evidence and appropriate translations.

  • Check occupation descriptions, dates and family details across the form and supporting records.

  • Follow the current instructions for health, character and any other applicable documents.

  • Retain the application reference, submission confirmation and payment record.

For documents prepared by different people, keep a simple record of the issuing organisation, current version and outstanding work. Resolve differences in names or dates by establishing the facts. Do not edit source documents merely to make them appear consistent. Follow the attachment instructions; a cloud link or unreadable bundle is not a substitute for supplying documents in the accepted way.

Check government charges at the time of application and budget separately for professional fees, translations, examinations and other costs. A payment receipt supports a payment step. A saved online form or partly uploaded evidence pack does not by itself establish that the visa application has been submitted.

Close the loop after submission

Have one person review the complete form and attachments, then retain the platform confirmation and monitor further correspondence. If an error occurs, keep the time and actual error message and use the official support process. An enquiry email does not itself extend an invitation. Establish the platform status before attempting another payment or creating another application.

Applicants in Australia must also manage their current permission independently. The current visa may expire before the invitation deadline. Put both documents on the same planning calendar, while keeping their legal functions separate. An EOI, an invitation, a lodged application and an actual bridging visa notice are different evidence. Resolve the earliest real deadline rather than assuming the invitation has extended your stay.
