Victoria 190 VPT Explained: State Ranking Versus Federal SkillSelect Points
The Victorian Points Test is used to rank Registrations of Interest for Victorian nomination. It is separate from the federal SkillSelect points test. A VPT figure of hundreds of points is not an increase to your federal visa score, and it cannot be added to it. Preparing a subclass 190 application means checking both the visa requirements and the state's selection process.
Keep the federal threshold separate from the state ranking
Home Affairs describes 65 points as the minimum threshold for the relevant points-tested visas and expressly says that meeting it does not guarantee an invitation. Victoria says the VPT has no fixed pass mark. Invitations depend on relative VPT totals in the pool and the available nomination places.
As checked on 26 October 2026, Victoria's 2026–27 program is open for subclass 190 ROIs. The VPT page also describes the ranking framework for subclass 491, but that is not evidence that every route has the same current opening arrangements. This guide focuses on understanding the ranking when preparing for subclass 190.
Check seven factors against the same evidence
The VPT considers age, English, experience in the nominated occupation, education, occupation skill level, applicable partner skills and applicable annual earnings from skilled employment in Victoria. It uses information from the EOI and ROI. The underlying employment, qualifications and family facts must remain consistent across both records.
Build an index showing the fact, evidence, relevant date and any unresolved issue for each factor. A senior job title does not establish the occupation's official skill level. Likewise, the number of years on a CV should not be copied into an occupation-specific calculation without checking duties, periods and the applicable instructions.
English weights are not federal English points
The published VPT table gives Competent English zero, Proficient English 100 and Superior English 200. These are Victorian ranking weights. Establish your actual English level using the accepted evidence and rules relevant to the test date, including the component results; an overall score alone may not answer that question.
If considering another test, record the current level, target, cost and preparation time. Compare the possible effect on the two systems separately. A planned result is not a qualification already obtained, and a higher score does not promise selection.
Partner points have their own conditions
For the VPT's 50 partner-skill points, the published conditions require 10 Partner Skills points claimed in the EOI, the partner's inclusion in the state-nominated visa application, and the partner's occupation being a current priority-industry occupation. The table gives zero for single applicants, Australian partners and those not meeting those conditions.
Do not convert federal single-applicant points directly into VPT partner points. Check the actual occupation code, eligibility and joint application arrangements. A marriage certificate or an employer operating in a priority industry does not establish all the required facts.
Earnings concern qualifying Victorian work
The VPT earnings factor concerns current skilled employment in Victoria. Overseas salary, a company's turnover or an investment portfolio's value should not be entered as if it were that income. Offshore applicants and people already working in Victoria have different ROI earnings instructions.
Use the official earnings guide to check the role, employer location and permitted remuneration components before relying on an amount. Having no claimable earnings does not, by itself, answer every nomination eligibility question. Resolve uncertainties from contracts and payroll evidence rather than adjusting a number to improve the ranking.
Priority selection is still competitive
Victoria describes selection from the most competitive ROIs across eligible occupations and selection within priority industries or industry subgroups. A priority occupation does not remove ranking or guarantee nomination. The government also says personal circumstances such as age, visa expiry or expiring evidence do not provide a basis for priority invitation.
Applicants with an ROI from a previous program year must follow the current instruction to submit a new ROI for 2026–27 consideration. Preserve the old reference and check the new registration rather than assuming an old account record carries forward automatically. For an initial discussion with 卓越移民 Premiervisa Group, prepare a short summary of location, assessed occupation, English, education, work history and any partner applying with you. The useful outcome is an evidence-based preparation list, not a guaranteed invitation score.
