UAE Virtual Work Residence: How to Prove Your Overseas Job and Salary

The UAE virtual work residence route is intended for people who continue working for an employer or business outside the UAE. The UAE Government says the visa is issued for one year and lists proof of work outside the UAE, a salary certificate showing at least US$3,500 a month (or the equivalent in another currency), health insurance, and a medical fitness result among the requirements. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) service card separately lists a passport, photograph, proof of remote employment outside the UAE, and a US$3,500 salary certificate. Check the exact checklist for the authority and emirate handling your application before filing.

What does the US$3,500 threshold mean?

The official UAE Government page states the minimum as US$3,500 per month, or the equivalent in a foreign currency. It is a salary threshold, not the total cost of moving to the UAE. Do not convert the figure into a fixed local-currency amount without checking the exchange rate and the authority’s current instructions on the filing date.

A salary certificate should make the employer, employee, job relationship, monthly pay and currency easy to identify. If the certificate gives an annual amount, variable pay, or a figure in a different currency, add supporting payroll records that make the monthly amount clear. The official source names a salary certificate; it does not publish a universal template or say that one document alone guarantees acceptance.

How can you show the job is outside the UAE?

ICP asks for proof of remote employment outside the UAE. A useful file should let the reviewer connect the applicant to a real overseas employer and understand that the work continues remotely. Depending on the actual arrangement, the supporting file may include an employer letter, employment agreement, recent payslips, or business records. These are practical supporting documents, not a promise that every authority requires every item.

Ask the employer’s letter to state the employer’s legal name and country, the applicant’s role and start date, whether the job is ongoing, the monthly salary and currency, and that the applicant may work remotely while residing in the UAE. The details should agree with the contract and salary evidence. If the applicant is self-employed or owns a company, do not describe that person as an employee; gather documents that accurately show the business and its overseas operation, then confirm with the issuing authority which evidence it accepts.

Prepare the identity and health documents

The ICP service card lists a passport and personal photograph. It also says the passport must be valid for at least six months and that the beneficiary does not need to be inside the UAE for the visa to be issued. The UAE Government’s virtual-work page lists health insurance and a medical fitness test result. Because document lists can depend on the route and the stage of the process, check the live application portal and the relevant emirate authority for the current requirements.

Keep names, passport numbers, dates and employer details consistent across every file. If a document is not in the language accepted by the authority, confirm whether a translation or attestation is needed before paying for it.

Which authority handles the application?

The UAE Government lists ICP and Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) as application channels. The ICP service card currently displays separate application, issuance and smart-services fees of AED 100 each, and a service-completion duration of two days. That duration is a service-card estimate after the stated requirements are complete; it is not a promise of approval or a full end-to-end processing guarantee. Fees and steps can differ by channel and can change, so confirm the amount shown in the live portal before submitting payment.

A pre-submission check

Before filing, make sure that:

• the work is for an employer or business outside the UAE;

• the monthly salary evidence meets the published US$3,500 threshold or clearly shows its foreign-currency equivalent;

• the employer letter, contract and payroll records tell the same story;

• the passport meets the six-month validity condition shown by ICP;

• you have checked the relevant channel’s current insurance, medical, photo, translation and fee requirements.

The residence route does not by itself settle questions about tax residence, local licensing, or whether a separate permit is needed for other work. Those questions depend on the person’s circumstances and the applicable rules; check them separately rather than treating a residence visa as a general work authorisation.
