France ICT Application Process: Assignment, Visa and Post-Arrival Steps

A French ICT process should begin with the real work arrangement, not with a visa label. Identify the overseas employer, the French host entity, the group relationship, the applicant’s management or expert role and the planned assignment period. Then confirm which visa or residence document fits. A positive application decision, a valid visa, post-arrival formalities and permission to start work are separate statuses and should be checked separately.

First confirm that the arrangement is an employee ICT posting

The employee ICT route concerns a temporary assignment within a group. Article L.421-26 requires at least six months’ professional seniority in the group and describes a senior-management or expert assignment to an entity in France belonging to that group. Check the actual employment contract and service history before building a file. If the real plan is direct employment by the French company, short-term work or another category, assess that route on its own; changing the heading on a posting letter does not change the underlying arrangement.

Choose the document by duration and application location

French public-service and France-Visas guidance describe different visa and residence arrangements by assignment length. A posting lasting more than a year may involve an employee ICT residence card. For a period over three months and up to a year, official guidance describes a long-stay visa equivalent to a residence permit bearing the ICT wording. The exact form, visa annotation, work authorization and appointment process should be checked against the applicant’s location and actual French work using the current official tools.

An applicant outside France is directed by the public-service page to the French consular authorities in their country of residence. Confirm consular jurisdiction, appointment method, current checklist and local procedure before filing. An employer’s preferred start date is not a government decision deadline. Avoid committing to non-refundable costs on the assumption that the permission will be issued by a particular date.

Make the evidence support one real assignment

The file should connect group seniority, the overseas employment contract, the French host entity, the actual role and the assignment period. The applicant, overseas employer and French host should each provide the facts they can verify. If company names changed, payroll comes from a different entity or the group structure has several layers, explain it with genuine records rather than simplifying the facts beyond what the evidence supports.

The applicant should read the final forms and attachments before lodging. A consultant or employer preparing documents does not mean the applicant has reviewed them, and a saved copy does not mean the French authority has received them. Keep the submission receipt, appointment record and official correspondence. Track “prepared”, “lodged”, “additional information requested” and “approved” as different stages.

After a visa is issued, follow the document-specific instructions

Check the name, passport details, visa wording, validity dates and permitted entry period. Some long-stay visas require post-arrival validation. A posting lasting more than twelve months may also require an application for the relevant residence card at the local prefecture within the stated period. France-Visas describes a two-month post-arrival window for the applicable long-duration ICT card process. Confirm the channel and deadline against the visa actually issued and the current local prefecture instructions.

Do not describe a residence procedure as complete while the required card has not been issued or a visa has not been validated. Set the work start date, housing and family travel around the official documents. If the contract, duties or assignment length changes during processing, ask whether the change affects the application before proceeding on the old plan.

Track each family member separately

The employee and accompanying family members may apply or receive documents at different times. Keep a separate record for each person’s application, validity dates, next step and responsible contact. The main applicant’s dates do not replace the family member’s own document requirements, and a family plan does not automatically extend the employee’s ICT permission.

Official sources and next step

Checked against official sources available on 22 October 2026. Before filing, confirm the intended permission, consular jurisdiction, assignment period and the instructions printed on the document issued.
