Australia Visa 600: Validity, Stay Period and VEVO Dates Explained
Official sources checked: 18 October 2026
A one-year visa does not necessarily mean a one-year visit
An Australian Visitor visa subclass 600 may have a validity period that looks generous. Before booking a return flight a year later, check what that period actually permits. The last date for entering Australia, the length of the permitted visit and the number of entries are different pieces of information. Read the grant letter alongside a current VEVO result. [S1][S2]
Home Affairs decides the stay arrangement for the overseas Tourist stream individually. The visit you requested is not necessarily the visit granted. A relative's earlier approval cannot establish your departure date. This guide explains how to organise those checks; it does not calculate an individual's lawful stay from a headline or screenshot.
Start a travel worksheet with a separate row for each traveller. Put the complete grant document beside the itinerary rather than saving only the page that shows the visa number. If someone else books your flights, give them the relevant date wording as well as the proposed journey. Keep passport and visa references in a private folder.

Check your own grant documents; a distant arrival deadline is not a guaranteed stay period.
Four fields to read before choosing a departure date
First, find the last-arrival wording, often labelled “Must not arrive after”. Next, find the permitted stay wording. Then check whether entry is single or multiple. Finally, read the attached conditions. These fields need to be considered together; one distant date cannot answer every travel question. [S2]
A grant may allow travel during a longer window while permitting a shorter visit after arrival. This is an explanation of the distinction, not a client example or a promise about a future grant. Where a document specifies an actual departure date, do not replace it with your own assumption that the clock restarts after each entry.
Copy the English field labels into your worksheet without changing their meaning. Add planned arrival and departure dates in a clearly different column. Mark any unresolved question before buying a non-refundable ticket. Ask, for example, whether a particular date limits arrival or the current visit. That is more useful than asking only whether the visa is still valid.
Read a VEVO expiry date in its location context
Home Affairs explains the expiry field for temporary visa holders differently according to whether the holder is inside or outside Australia. VEVO also distinguishes the arrival deadline, period of stay and entries allowed. Check the location recorded when interpreting a result. [S2]
Save a fresh result before departure and check again after arrival. Label each copy with the date of the check, the passport used, your location and the itinerary being considered. If your family exchanges screenshots, keep the version dates visible. Otherwise a parent may plan travel using a screenshot taken before the most recent trip.
When a grant letter and a VEVO result seem inconsistent, first make sure both concern the same traveller and relevant visa. Do not select whichever date is later because it suits the booking. VEVO concerns the current in-effect visa; it is not a tracker for a new application awaiting a decision. An application receipt should therefore not be read as a fresh visitor grant. [S3]
If the difference remains unresolved, collect the complete documents and obtain help before travelling. Airline booking staff can explain a reservation, but that does not make them responsible for determining your immigration position.
Multiple entry and cruises need their own checks
Multiple entry is not permission to use repeated short departures as a residence plan. The actual grant, conditions and purpose of the visit still matter. Keep a record of every arrival and departure, particularly when visiting children or other relatives frequently.
Home Affairs specifically warns that a round-trip cruise, as it defines that journey, does not reset the visitor stay period: the cruise time counts as time in Australia. Ask the operator how the journey is classified before assuming an overseas port changes your immigration timeline. [S1]
Put any cruise beside the rest of the itinerary in the same worksheet. Do not let the holiday booking confirmation become a separate timeline that omits days relevant to the visa. If the intention is to live with family for an extended period, explore an appropriate longer-stay route rather than repeatedly changing a tourist itinerary.
Parents should check cumulative-stay conditions
For certain parents or step-parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents, Home Affairs describes longer-validity arrangements with a limit of twelve months in an eighteen-month period and adequate health insurance. This is not a universal arrangement automatically granted to every subclass 600 holder. Read your own approval and conditions first. [S1]
For a parent who travels often, keep a continuous movement log with exact arrival and departure dates, the passport used and supporting records. Do not round several visits into whole months or leave out a brief visit simply because it was not the main family holiday. The log is an organising tool, not a substitute for checking how the applicable condition operates.
A longer visit requires more than a changed flight
Extending the original subclass 600 is not the mechanism for staying longer. A further visa may need to be considered, and conditions such as 8503 can restrict further applications. Whether another application can be made in Australia and what status applies while it is assessed require separate checks. [S1]
If family circumstances, health or travel plans change, gather the grant letter, current VEVO result, actual entry date and the reason for the change promptly. Explain the full sequence of events when seeking advice. A request to stay for another few months is not enough information to assess all the relevant dates.
Do not assume that sending an enquiry pauses a departure deadline. If lawful stay is close to ending or has already ended, seek qualified assistance immediately. Changing a ticket and changing an immigration position are separate tasks.
A practical final review and common questions
Before departure, check each family member individually. Compare the passport, grant wording, current VEVO result and return booking. Add any planned cruise, mid-trip departure or passport replacement to the review. Save the documents used and the date of the check, then repeat the review if the itinerary changes.
Does a confirmed return ticket prove the date is permitted? No. A booking records your travel plan; compare it with the visa documents rather than treating it as immigration permission.
Can I request the same stay as a relative? You can explain your genuine travel plans, but another person's grant does not create an entitlement to the same arrangement. [S1]
What should I send for an initial review? Start with the complete grant letter, a recent VEVO result, your actual travel dates and the exact wording that is unclear. Describe the question in ordinary language. Leave passport details out of public comments or social-media messages and use the firm's designated private assessment channel.

Programme information and consultation
For an initial review, prepare the complete grant letter, current VEVO result and actual travel dates. PremierVisa can clarify the assessment scope; any conclusion about your individual legal status should be made by an appropriately qualified Australian professional.
