Hong Kong TechTAS Salary Packages: Cash Pay, Bonuses and Share Options Before You Accept

Research scientist and compensation manager reviewing a Hong Kong employment offer

A Hong Kong research company offers you a salary, an annual bonus and share options. The recruitment team describes the total package as competitive, but the offer letter gives only the cash salary and refers to a separate equity plan. Before relocating, you need to understand what is actually promised, what remains discretionary and how the employer will explain the package in its TechTAS application.

The official TechTAS application guide requires remuneration at least at the prevailing Hong Kong market level for comparable jobs. That does not give every researcher one universal salary figure. The useful question is how this particular role, employment arrangement and documented package compare with genuinely similar appointments.

This article offers a practical method for applicants, founders and HR teams preparing a compensation review. It does not publish an invented government salary threshold, value a private company's shares or predict a visa decision. The aim is to make the offer understandable before employment and immigration arrangements become expensive to change.

Read the employment offer as several separate promises

Start with the monthly cash salary, currency and payment frequency. Identify whether the stated amount is gross pay, an estimated net figure or a headline total including benefits. A candidate comparing international offers can easily mistake an annual package for guaranteed annual cash. Ask the employer to show how each element is calculated rather than relying on the recruiter’s summary.

Then distinguish guaranteed payments from conditional ones. A contractual payment with an identifiable amount and payment date is different from a bonus that depends on company performance, personal targets or board discretion. Neither should disappear from the description, but they should not be presented as if they carry the same certainty.

Finally, separate compensation from reimbursement. A relocation payment may cover an initial flight or temporary accommodation. A research travel budget may reimburse expenditure incurred for the company. Those arrangements serve different purposes from recurring pay available for household spending. Clear categories help the applicant compare offers and give the company a more accurate explanation of what it is proposing.

Compare the work before comparing the salary

A salary comparison is only useful when the underlying jobs are reasonably similar. A scientist leading a new experimental programme is not necessarily comparable with a junior engineer implementing an established product. Record the research responsibility, seniority, relevant expertise, team size and expected independence before collecting pay references.

Describe the genuine appointment without inflating the title. If the person will design experiments, supervise researchers and review technical results, explain those responsibilities. If the role includes routine delivery, maintenance or customer support, show that too. A large salary does not itself resolve whether the underlying appointment fits the proposed immigration route.

For the company, the best comparison may involve several references rather than one attractive advertisement. Explain why each reference is relevant and where it differs. A role with a similar title but a different discipline or level of responsibility should not silently become the decisive benchmark. The objective is a reasoned comparison, not a folder containing the highest salaries found online.

Keep a record of the benchmark's limitations

Salary surveys, recruitment advertisements and recruiter discussions can inform an employer's review, but they describe different things. An advertisement may show a broad range, a survey may combine several kinds of appointment, and a recruiter may be discussing a specific candidate market. Identify the source, date, currency and definition of compensation beside each reference.

If a reference includes annual bonus or allowances, avoid comparing that total directly with another employer's basic monthly salary. Rebuild the figures using consistent categories where the underlying information allows it. Where the data cannot support a clean comparison, state the limitation instead of manufacturing precision.

Keep this exercise proportionate. A concise explanation of relevant comparisons is usually more useful to an adviser than dozens of unexplained screenshots. The employer should be able to describe why the offer makes commercial sense for its actual R&D appointment. The candidate should understand which parts of that explanation are evidence and which are assumptions requiring further clarification.

Ask what the bonus depends on

Read the bonus clause and any incorporated policy together. Identify the assessment period, decision maker, payment timing and conditions affecting entitlement. A target bonus mentioned during recruitment may not be a contractual promise of that amount. Ask for clarification in writing if the presentation and the legal documents describe different arrangements.

Consider the first year separately. Relocation may occur partway through the company's performance cycle, and the applicant may not yet know how individual objectives will be agreed. Ask whether the proposed arrangement addresses a partial year, probation or a delayed start. Do not assume that the recruiter’s annual illustration answers those questions.

For immigration preparation, describe the genuine bonus terms without converting uncertain payments into guaranteed income. For personal budgeting, test whether recurring commitments remain affordable if the variable payment is lower than expected. These are related planning questions, but the candidate's preferred budget cannot determine how an authority will assess the employer's remuneration evidence.

Treat share options as a separate document review

An option grant and a cash salary are different promises. Request the relevant grant terms, plan rules and explanation of how the arrangement applies to this employee. A short line stating that equity is available may leave unanswered questions about the amount, vesting, exercise price and what happens after employment ends.

Private-company equity can be difficult to compare with spendable income. Ask what valuation is being used, who prepared it and whether any actual opportunity to sell shares is available. A fundraising valuation does not mean that an employee can realise the same value immediately. An immigration application should not use an optimistic equity illustration as an unexplained substitute for clear contractual remuneration.

This is a point for coordinated advice. The employer can explain its plan, an appropriate legal or financial specialist can review the equity terms, and the immigration adviser can identify the compensation information relevant to the proposed application. None of those reviews should be presented as a promise that a particular option valuation will be accepted.

Clarify allowances and accommodation arrangements

Housing support can materially affect a family's relocation decision. Ask whether the company will provide accommodation, reimburse rent, pay a fixed allowance or make a temporary relocation contribution. Record the amount or calculation method, duration and documents governing the arrangement. Avoid describing all four possibilities simply as a housing package.

Identify practical conditions as well as headline value. The candidate may need to sign a lease, pay a deposit or obtain employer approval before reimbursement. A benefit may end after an initial period. Those details influence the household's available cash even where the offer sounds generous.

For the employer, the same clear description helps keep the contract, internal approval and application consistent. Do not assume that a tax description of a benefit automatically answers the immigration remuneration question. If the company and candidate are using different figures for the same arrangement, reconcile them before submission rather than waiting for a document request to expose the difference.

Explain overseas payments rather than hiding them

International groups sometimes pay part of a package through an overseas entity. Identify who owes each payment, which agreement creates the obligation and how the Hong Kong appointment relates to the existing employment. A transfer through a foreign bank account does not, by itself, explain the legal employer or the work being undertaken locally.

Give the adviser a complete payment map. It should connect the employing entity, payroll administrator, bonus provider and equity issuer to the relevant documents. If an overseas payment is intended to continue after relocation, state whether its purpose or conditions will change. A payroll screenshot alone may not explain the arrangement.

This is also a reason to involve a suitable tax adviser. The Inland Revenue Department's employee income guidance covers various employment payments, including certain income paid by overseas companies. The tax review and immigration review should use the same truthful facts while addressing their different questions. Do not promise that foreign payment automatically makes employment income exempt.

Build a household budget from reliable amounts

Prepare a relocation budget using the payments you can actually explain. Include housing, school-related expenditure where relevant, transport, insurance and the initial costs of moving. The exercise is personal planning, not evidence that every applicant with that budget meets an immigration condition.

Run more than one scenario. The first can use recurring contractual cash. Another can add a conservative estimate of variable compensation, clearly labelled as an assumption. A third can show the effect of a later start or delayed reimbursement. This reveals where the household is relying on a payment that has not yet been confirmed.

Discuss the result before signing. If the cash component does not support the intended move, the answer may be a different package, housing arrangement or relocation timetable. Writing a larger theoretical equity value into a spreadsheet does not pay an immediate deposit. The applicant should be able to make an informed decision independently of the company's enthusiasm about recruitment.

Resolve differences between the quota and appointment documents

Compare the approved or proposed position details with the final offer. Identify differences in the title, duties, employing entity, remuneration or employment period. A negotiation can improve the package while also making an earlier description outdated. The company should give its adviser the latest documents rather than assuming that the application automatically reflects every subsequent conversation.

Do not quietly repair a discrepancy by changing only one page. Explain what changed, when it changed and which documents now govern the appointment. The adviser can then determine whether clarification, updated evidence or an appropriate procedural step is needed. The company should not treat an internal compensation approval as an immigration approval.

Keep a single final version for HR, the candidate and the application preparer. Drafts can remain in the company's records, but the people responsible for submission need to know which terms have actually been agreed. This simple discipline reduces the risk of an old salary figure appearing in one document while a new figure appears elsewhere.

Keep tax reporting distinct from visa eligibility

A tax form, an employment contract and a visa decision serve different purposes. Recording a payment for tax does not itself establish that the package meets the relevant immigration assessment. Similarly, the way an equity benefit is discussed during recruitment does not settle its tax treatment.

The IRD's employer FAQs address reporting issues for share options, including situations involving options granted before Hong Kong employment. Use the relevant official guidance with a qualified tax professional rather than applying a general claim that all employee shares are tax-free. The actual grant and employment circumstances matter.

For application preparation, keep the contractual promise and supporting evidence clear. For tax preparation, keep the relevant grant, exercise, payroll and employment records as advised. The two workstreams should exchange accurate facts without substituting one conclusion for the other. PremierVisa Group's immigration review should have an agreed scope; specialist tax or equity advice should be identified separately where required.

Protect sensitive compensation information

Offer letters and equity documents can contain personal identifiers, private valuations and confidential company information. Begin a consultation with a summary of the arrangement and ask which underlying documents are needed. Use an agreed private channel for the relevant material rather than putting full contracts into a public enquiry form.

Where a document concerns a group plan, identify the clauses relevant to the individual appointment. Do not remove a condition merely because it makes the offer less attractive. An adviser cannot assess a promise accurately if the vesting or termination provision has been omitted from the copy supplied.

Ask who is responsible for coordinating the review inside the company. HR may know the cash package while finance or legal holds the equity rules. A named coordinator can gather the actual terms without repeatedly asking the candidate to obtain documents that only the employer controls. Privacy and completeness should support the same accurate review.

A practical example of a package that needs clarification

Imagine a research company offering a scientist a fixed salary, a discretionary performance bonus and options in an overseas parent. The recruiter describes all three as one annual figure. The scientist plans household spending using that total, although the options cannot currently be sold and the bonus depends on objectives that have not been agreed.

The sensible next step is to separate the promises. The company confirms the cash terms, supplies the bonus policy and identifies the option issuer and relevant plan. It also explains the actual Hong Kong R&D duties and the remuneration comparison for that role. The applicant can then assess the practical move using information that is more reliable than a headline number.

This is a hypothetical preparation example, not a reported PremierVisa approval. It does not show that a particular salary or equity package qualifies. It illustrates how the same clarification can improve the employment decision, the evidence supplied to an immigration adviser and the questions referred to a tax or equity specialist.

Prepare a concise compensation summary for consultation

An initial summary should state the proposed employing company, job title, main research duties, employment period and intended start. Add the cash salary, currency, guaranteed payments, variable bonus terms, benefits and equity arrangements. Identify documents already available and questions still awaiting an employer response.

For each item, name the document supporting it. A salary can refer to the signed offer, an allowance to the benefit policy, and an option to its grant agreement. If the figures are provisional, say so. This allows the adviser to identify what can be reviewed now and what requires confirmation before an application is prepared.

The ITC application guides and forms page is the starting point for selecting the relevant official materials. The compensation summary is a working aid, not a replacement for required documents or forms. Its value lies in making the actual package and unresolved issues visible without pretending that a private checklist determines eligibility.

Review probation, delayed starts and later salary changes

Ask whether any compensation term changes during probation. The signed agreement may describe a different salary, benefit entitlement or notice arrangement before confirmation. If the application describes one package while the actual employment begins on another, the company should raise that difference with its adviser. Do not assume that the later, more attractive terms adequately describe the initial appointment.

A delayed start can also affect an offer that seemed complete. The employer may have approved a joining bonus for a particular date, or a share grant may depend on the employee joining before a specified board meeting. Confirm whether those promises remain available when immigration preparation or personal relocation takes longer than originally planned. Neither the applicant nor the employer should invent a guaranteed application timetable to preserve an internal recruitment deadline.

After arrival, keep records of actual payments and subsequent contractual changes. A pay review, promotion or revised research role should be documented accurately. If duties or other approved particulars change, ask what immigration step is appropriate rather than treating a higher salary as permission for an unrelated appointment. The application history and the current employment should remain understandable together.

Assign responsibility for this follow-up. The employee can retain payslips and agreed amendments, while HR maintains the authoritative contract and benefit records. Finance should explain any difference between a contractual amount and a payroll entry. An unexplained deduction or missing allowance may be a payroll question, but it can still affect the candidate's understanding of the promised package.

This continuity matters when preparing a later review. Records created during genuine employment are easier to explain than a retrospective spreadsheet that reconstructs several inconsistent versions. It also lets the employee raise a problem while the relevant people and documents are readily available, instead of discovering the discrepancy only when another application is being prepared.

Questions candidates and HR teams often ask

Is there one official TechTAS salary that every researcher must receive?

Do not rely on an invented universal figure. The official remuneration requirement refers to the prevailing market level for comparable Hong Kong jobs. Review the genuine duties, seniority and documented package with relevant evidence rather than assuming that any widely quoted amount is a government threshold.

Can share options make a lower cash offer acceptable?

Do not assume so. Describe the actual option terms and the cash component separately, then obtain a review of the proposed remuneration evidence. A private valuation or recruitment illustration does not establish how the relevant authority will assess the package.

Should we omit an overseas payment from the application review?

No. Give the adviser a complete, accurate account of the payments and employment relationships. The review can then identify relevant evidence and any separate tax questions. The location of a bank account should not replace an explanation of who pays the employee and why.

Can PremierVisa Group guarantee that our proposed package will be approved?

No. The useful service is a documented review of the proposed route, appointment and evidence, with outstanding questions identified before submission. Immigration decisions remain with the authorities. Any specialist tax, legal or equity valuation work should be discussed within a separately agreed professional scope.

Discuss the offer before committing to relocation

Contact PremierVisa Group in Hong Kong with a concise description of the research appointment and package. Ask what the immigration review will cover, which employer records are needed and which questions require another professional. The company and candidate should agree who will supply outstanding compensation documents.
